Adsense | Poll: Hurricane Irene Hurt Your AdSense Income

I hope all you east coasters (I am one of you) made it through Hurricane Irene without much of an issue. I was very lucky myself.

But even those not in the path of the storm were nervous about the impact Hurricane Irene would have on their business.

A WebmasterWorld thread has some publishers asking if the hurricane had any negative impact on their AdSense income. With millions of people losing power and still many without power, it can cause a major issue for sites who depend on their AdSense income.

If people cannot turn on their computers or access the internet, they cannot navigate the web or search the internet. If they can 't do that, they can ' t click on ads and make money for publishers.

The big question I have is, is your weekend traffic and income down from a typical weekend? Here is our poll:

Adsense | Panda 2.4 And Analytics Session Update Rolled Out Simultaneously

On August 12, Google announced that their high-quality sites algorithm, otherwise known as "Panda", had been rolled out for all languages save for Korean, Chinese, and Japanese . The change is said to impact 6-9% of users' queries, down from the 12% seen in the initial Panda update back in February. Though the official announcement post doesn't make mention of this update's effect on English queries, Vanessa Fox at Search Engine Land reported that a few minor changes were made, but there shouldn't be a substantial impact .

Only 9 hours earlier, the Google Analytics blog announced a change to the way visits are to be calculated , effective immediately. We'll get into just how this changed in a bit, but according to the announcement post, "most users will see less than a 1% change".

So, with all of of my clients being US based, I wasn't expecting to see much of a change from Panda, and I can deal with a 1% change in Google Analytics. However, apparantly two insubstantial impacts make a big one, because upon checking Analytics on Monday night, I was surprised to see this:

Organic traffic is up 30% week over week

This particular client saw a 20% drop from the initial Panda update back in February, and we've been working to get back to previous levels ever since. Was this the recovery we'd been hoping for?! After all, the site in question hardly fit the mold of the typical 'Panda-lized' site. Though we were told not to expect much change to English SERPs, I was hopeful.

Google's decision to push Panda 2.4 and the Google Analytics update on the same day wreaked havoc on my ability to see what was really going on. I can only imagine that some of the first-time Panda sites using Google Analytics are reeling right now.

Google pretty frequently points out that many of their teams do not share information intentionally. As an example, the search team has stated time and again that sites that run AdSense advertisements do not receive preferential treatment in the SERPs, despite the fact that this would positively affect Google's bottom line. Similarly, Google's other web properties like Maps, Places and Knol (purportedly) aren't given any special treament, either. Perhaps this is a similar case, but it's borderline irresponsible for Google to have pushed these two updates simultaneously. I believe the onus falls more on the Analytics team, but it's hard to know really.

In trying to get to the bottom of this issue, it's important to understand how visit calculation in Google Analytics had changed. Straight from the announcement blog post:

Currently, Google Analytics ends a session when:

More than 30 minutes have elapsed between pageviews for a single visitor.

At the end of a day.

When a visitor closes their browser.

If any of these events occur, then the next pageview from the visitor will start a new session.

In the new model, Google Analytics will end a session when:

More than 30 minutes have elapsed between pageviews for a single visitor.

At the end of a day.

When any traffic source value for the user changes. Traffic source information includes: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_term, utm_content, utm_id, utm_campaign, and gelid.

Ultimately, this change is about assigning proper attribution for conversions and engagement. As Michael Whitaker points out in his blog post , previous to August 11, it was possible to find plenty of keywords with pageviews and unique visitor counts but 0 visits. Grab the custom report from his post to see for yourself, or take a look here (with filter applied so that visits = 0):

Now, each new keyword is going to count as a visit, which is really the right move. See this same report set to a date after the change:

So what is actually going on here? Well, here are a few real-world scenarios where the way that visits is calculated is changing.

Scenario 1:

Previously, the second visit to your site would still count towards the original query, "Product Name". The conversion is attributed to the most recent non-direct source, so "Your Brand + Product Name" gets the credit, but would not appear in your organic keyword report (or would with 0 visits attached). Now, this counts as 2 separate sessions, and "Your Brand + Product Name" will appear in your organic keyword report with 1 visit.

Scenario 2:

Again, now this counts as two visits, where it used to be one. In fact, for this particular client, I believe this scenario was pretty common, as average query length increased significantly, suggesting users were refining their queries.

Still, in my example above organic visits were up over 30%. This is quite a bit more than the expected 1% change from Google Analytics, and the "insubstantial impact" from Panda 2.4. How can I know if there is any Panda recovery at play? If I want to compare apples to apples, the answer is going to have to come from my visit-agnostic numbers: Pageviews and Unique Visitors.

So it is pretty obvious from the images above that while traffic is on the rise, it's not quite up 30%. It does remain pretty difficult to tell if there was any sort of Panda impact at all, or just a natural growth from some recent link building successes.

Another factor at play in some of this data is that Google acknowledged a bug in the original rollout of this change, and

We identified an issue responsible for unexpected traffic changes following our recent update to how sessions are defined in Google Analytics. A fix was released at 2pm PST Tuesday August 16th. The issue affected some sites using the following configurations:

Taking a look again at the visits report above, this bug obviously affected the site in question, as visits after Tuesday dropped considerably. Still, the overall effect here is a change significantly higher than a 1% increase.

Again, non-English sites using Google Analytics that are seeing Panda for the first time may be in for a bit of a headache. I'm hoping I was able to shed some light on this problem.

U. of Miami booster reveals impermissible benefits from 2002-10

An 11-month investigation by Yahoo! Sports into the U. of Miami 's athletic program revealed that dozens of Miami football players allegedly accepted a wide range of impermissible benefits over a span of nearly a decade.

Nevin Shapiro, a longtime Miami booster who is currently serving a 20-year jail sentence for coordinating a $ 930 million Ponzi scheme, told Yahoo! that he supplied at least 72 current and former Miami athletes with benefits that are in clear violation of several NCAA bylaws .

Among the illicit benefits that Shapiro provided were cash payments of as much as $ 50,000 to individual players; thousands of dollars 'worth of jewelry and clothing; free yacht rides and trips to night clubs; prostitution paid for by the booster for 39 players; and bounties for any Miami players who were able to injure the star players on rival teams such as Florida and Florida State. Shapiro and other sources have provided considerable amounts of documentation to back up their claims.

Shapiro also said that several Miami coaches "including longtime head men 's basketball coach Frank Haith " were aware of Shapiro ' s activities and sometimes were actively involved.
The NCAA has been conducting its own investigation of Miami 's athletic program for the past five months. Potential punishments for the alleged violations remain unknown.

Google to buy Motorola Mobility for $ 12.5B

Google announced its intent on Monday to acquire Motorola Mobility for $ 12.5 billion. If approved by regulators, the deal would catapult Google - the maker of Android - into competition with other smart phone makers, including Apple.

"The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences, " said Larry Page, CEO of Google, in a post on the company 's blog.

The merger would give Google access to the over 17,000 patents that Motorola Mobility currently holds. Google had previously tried to acquire several thousand patents from Nokia, but was outbid other firms.

Google has acquired many of its products through acquistions, including AdSense and Youtube. The Motorola deal would be Google 's largest.

Adsense | The Digital Future Of Journalism Is Transactions

For the longest time, I felt a calling WAS news. Report the facts. Cultivate your sources. Uncover information. Write the story for the public good. Journalism was - and still Largely remains - a top-down, one-to-many business, with the Sami "voice of God " formula That One TV executive vowed to do away with never intended DID. I still see it as a calling, though I must admitted to cynicism Some After 35 plus years doing this. Goal I 've definitely shed my journalistic upbringing arrogant. Today, I Believe Digital news Itself Is Like the Web - That is, a transactional affair.

The Web is the ultimate marketplace as well as ideas Where goods and services are Exchanged. It Is Essentially different from print, broadcast and cable. Sure, traditional media Can Stimulate a response, the goal IS discontinuous response - it Requires A Separate channel, Such as the Postal Service or year number 800 - and it 's never permitted to Have Equal Weight. The Web is a channel and Stimulate That Fulfill Both. It 's One and the Same Because ITS tools help blur the line Between sellers (That includes journalists) and buyers (That includes news consumers).

The Web 's Effectiveness has-been pretty clear for commerce, Especially with the arrival of Google AdSense. Advertisers are feeling the potential, too. "Brand " advertising HAS Always Been That abstraction Aimed at the consumer market Known As ( "I know half my advertising dollars are wasted - I just donated 't know Which half! " Quips the ad man). "Fulfillment " advertising IS different - and perfect for the Web. It 's Aimed Directly at the Individual and Seek responsible individualism year - a transaction. The Unanswered Question IS Will Attempt to whether marketers - or Could Even Be effective at - using the the Web as a channel to fold brand Campaigns Into fulfillment transaction-based selling.

Now, commerce and journalism IS NOT it 's not advertising. But The Web 's impact on the news media IS NOT dissimilar. No longer Is the journalist Addressing the abstract notion of "the reader. " On the Web, the author connects one at a time with Individual readers, right down to the IP address. That means clustering journalists must now commit, or "transact, " accordingly. Does not this negate all at our (mine, too) rich heritage. In Fact, We Need to draw on it to Effectively transactional practice journalism.

This all Became Much clearer to me last week we've released a new article page FORBES - a template for authoritative news in this unfolding era of social journalism, Which is in large part transaction-based journalism. Our new page puts the journalist - or the topic-specific expert - at the very center of a community of followers Who Respect That person 's knowledge or world view. Among Many features, we created a new social layer Directly Beneath Every post 's headline That Called Out highlights comments, the direct transactions Between Our Authors and Their Individual readers.

Our Evolving contributor incentive program IS built for transactions. It rewards authors Who ATTRACT year and build audience around Their page Effectively a "product " based on topic-specific knowledge Their. Transacting Helps Them secure a fair hearing for Their brand. Both staffers and contributors must still report, write and CULTIVATE sources, purpose THEY aussi Need to commit - to react and find followers, corresponds to transact with the commenters and Individual reader just as They Do With A fellow journalist in the office, at lunch or over dinner. Each Of Those transactions reader Will lead to smarter and better journalism.

Adsense | Google's 16 Biggest Acquisitions So Far"And What Happened To Them [Google]

Google's $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola will be its biggest acquisition ever - more than four times the size of DoubleClick, the previous leader.

But over the last decade, Google has been one of the biggest-and most successful-acquirers in the tech industry, and owes a lot of its success to these smart buys. Its core search advertising platform and most of its biggest new businesses, including Android, YouTube, and display advertising, all come from other companies.

Here's Google's top 16 acquisitions by value and show what happened to them.

Last October, Google MA chief David Lawee called the 2005 acquisition of Android-the mobile phone platform started by ex-Danger leader Andy Rubin-its "best deal ever." Less than three years after launch, it has become the most popular smartphone platform in the world.

Google paid about $50 million for social search QA service Aardvark in February 2010, but hasn't really done much with it yet. However, there are hints in Google+ code that suggest that Aardvark - or what's left of it - will soon be integrated into Google's new social network.

Google bought this mobile-payment platform in August 2010. Onlookers assumed it would be part of Google's social networking efforts. In fact, the team was put to work on in-app payments, and earlier this month Google said it would shut down the Jambool Social Gold service in May, and replace it with its own in-app payment system.

Google bought this ad technology company last June, making its 24-year-old founder Nat Turner a young millionaire. Invite is a demand-side platform (DSP), which helps ad buyers place their wares on ad exchanges, and hasn't yet been integrated into Google's other ad-buying products. Google recently wrote a blog post explaining when advertisers should use Invite versus the Google Display Network.

In Jue 2007, Google paid $100 million for this company, which creates tools for advertisers and users to manage RSS feeds. It's still around, but RSS has become less interesting in the wake of Twitter - which is now run by former Feedburner founder Dick Costolo.

Google bought this visual search company last summer, and put the team to work building a search vertical for women's fashion called Boutiques.com.

David Lawee may think Android is Google's best acquisition, but from a pure ROI perspective it's hard to beat Applied Semantics, which built AdSense - the paid search advertising platform that's still responsible for most of Google's revenue and profits.

This one was a mistake: in 2006, Google paid $102 million for this platform for automatic placement of radio ads, and offered a whopping guarantee of up to $1.1 billion based on performance. But the business never took off, and Google shut the program down in mid-2009.

Google tried to buy this video compression company for $106 million, but its shareholders held out for a higher price and eventually got $133 million in January 2010. Last summer, Google announced it would open-source the VP8 video codec it acquired with On2, and rename it WebM. Google has since tried to push WebM as a replacement for H.264, a much more widely used standard for Web video.

Google bought the social gaming company behind SuperPoke last August for $228 million (the price was originally reported at $182 million). Slide still operates as a separate entity within Google, and doesn't seem to be contributing much to Google+, the company's new social networking initiative. Instead, it's out there creating standalone mobile products like photo-sharing app Photovine .

Google announced plans to buy Admeld in June to boost its display advertising business. Regulators announced last month that they're taking a close look at the deal, but that doesn't mean it will be blocked - regulators also took a second look at ITA and DoubleClick, and both of those deals eventually closed.

Google bought this company in June 2007 and integrated its add-on email services, like spam-blocking and archiving, into Gmail for business users. It's been a critical part of Google's enterprise apps business ever since.

Google made a $700 million bid for ITA, which compiles flight information for airlines, travel agencies - and rival search engines. The bid garnered complaints from competitors who rely on ITA's service, but the feds eventually approved it with conditions.

Android is all about increasing mobile search usage today, but Google hopes to make mobile advertising in general into a huge business. That's why it paid $750 million for AdMob in November 2009. Since then, however, AdMob execs have left - including former CEO Omar Hamoui (pictured here) - and sources have said the integration isn't going so well .

It looks like a no-brainer now, but when Google bought the video-sharing service in 2009, it was a huge risk: YouTube was full of

Adsense | Google Is Now The Proud Owner Of Android.me

It 's not exactly Googorola-sized news, but I just noticed that Google has very recently gained ownership over the domain Android.me (not worth linking as it is currently not in use - yet?).

Now, Google may have simply asked - or forced - the former owner to transfer ownership of the catchy domain name, so it doesn 't necessarily mean that it ' s going to launch a product by that name (besides, they already own android.com so why bother?).

For that and other reasons, I think it 's unlikely Google is planning to make Android.me the home for a new service, although I ' ve been known to be wrong before. Either way, somewhat interesting.

After all,. Me domain names are starting to get in vogue lately. Google worked on the Ro.me project, for instance, and there are plenty of other examples such as About.me, which was acquired by our parent company AOL, but also Ask.me, Connect.me, txt.me, Blog. me, Blip.me, With.me and News.me, a joint project from bit.ly and The New York Times).

Then there are startups like Tango, Kiip and Formspring, which also went with. Me domain names.

The list goes on: Facebook owns fb.me, WordPress owns wp.me, Yahoo owns me.me, Microsoft owns windows.me, AOL owns aol.me, VKontakte owns vk.me, and Time Magazine owns ti.me.

Google should probably have a chat with WhitePages.com, by the way, as they own goog.me.

According to a recent blog post by the. ME Registry, more than 530,000. Me domain names - in 200 countries - have been secured in the three years they 've been publicly available for registration.

Google was smart enough to register a couple of. Me domain names from the get-go, including google.me, gmail.me, adwords.me, adsense.me, plus.me, blogger.me, orkut.me and youtube. me.

For whatever reason, they missed out on android.me and chro.me - but now they 've solved half of that particular problem.

Adsense | Basic Fundamentals Of Search Engine Marketing

Titles and meta tags, too as descriptors located inside the code of a site, support to figure out how it ranks in search engines. Having said that, the bulk of warrenton virginia web site designs deals with the key phrases located inside the text of a page. Some words naturally rank higher than others. Synonyms may also be worlds apart when it comes to search reputation, a pivotal aspect of optimizing for key phrases. By far the most advantages could be gained by modeling your site just after key phrases that obtain the least amount of searches. This indicates you 'll have less competition throughout the web - particularly those well-established websites - to drive visitors with those certain words. Google 's AdSense tool may be the most successful way to get an idea about which key phrases to use, specially since their results precisely reflect lookups from their search engine, which may be the most regularly employed.

Following the modification of textual content, among the less systematic strategies of northern va seo may be the purchase of ad space and back linking. A webmaster with high aspirations will most likely appear to purchase advertisements on well-known, relevant internet websites. A site that investigates fraudulent literary publishers could appear for ad space on the internet websites of legitimate publishers. When search engine spiders come across links from a well-established site to a lesser known 1, the quality of the latter is enhanced, leading to a higher search ranking. Advertisements can also be purchased to seem on the results pages of search engines. Searchers feel confident that any paid-for search results are legitimate, and possibly won 't second-guess clicking them if it ' s one thing that interests them.

It should be noted that getting a well-optimized web page right now doesn 't guarantee exactly the same for tomorrow. Search providers typically change the way their spiders crawl internet sites, resulting in modified search results. Algorithm changes usually mean that an alteration inside the way content is written and placed are going to be required. Web web page owners must be on constant watch for such changes. By far the most current change produced to Google 's search engine, codenamed "Panda, " sent quite a few content farm internet sites on a downward plummet in search rankings. If they hope to regain their credibility, they 'll need to make main changes to the way their internet sites are administered. As a result, probably the most usually stay on the lookout for new changes to algorithms if 1 hopes to help keep their web page totally optimized.

Adsense | How To Create A Visual Task Management Dashboard

As a full-time Internet Marketer, I am involved in a fairly large number of projects at any given time. I have a portfolio of Adsense sites, a blog, a membership site, a link building service and a facebook application (in development) With so ma ny projects on the go, maintaining my productivity can sometimes be a challenge!

Before I get into the tools, I want to touch on a very important con cept; how I organize my mind and prioritize my activities.

In my business, I 'm primarily concerned with building online assets that will produce a passive cash flow for me for years to

If you are in the asset business and you are n 't consistently building new assets, you are a dead duck!

There is one other key to understan ding the key to my productivity; store nothing on my own hard drive and put everything onl ine so I can access it from anywhere.

While Google docs aren 't new to anyone, I us e the spreadsheet in a way that consistently gets a ton of requests for copies f rom my readers. My secret is to use the spreadsheet as a visual dashboard for ta sk management.

In my case, I have a portfolio of websites that are largely maint ained by my team of Virtual Assistants. I have VAs that do link building, I have VAs that launch sites, I have VAs that handle article marketing, and VAs that m anage the tasks of other VAs!

Because each VA is involved in more than one proje ct, it can be a challenge for them (and me!) To keep everything straight; especially witho ut a mountain of emails flowing back and forth.

In the screenshot below you can see my niche site task management dashboard (the red areas contain confidential information). This dashboard is used to manage my growing portfolio of niche web sites that produce a wonderful stream of passive income.

Across the top are the URLs of each site, so essentially, each column is its own mini-project.

Then, do wn the left hand side are all the tasks that would be associated with each site. I then have each VA that work s for me subscribe to changes in this spreadsheet so that any time they, or I, make a change, we all get a color coded notificatio n.

By organizing my projects this way, I am able to very easily see the status of their work on a variety of sites. Plus, we also use it as a communication too l.

For example, if a new task is assigned, I mark the cell in blue and put the VA 's name on it. If I have special comments, I include them in the comments of the cell. Then, once they have started the task, they change the cell to yellow. If, at some poi nt, they run into a challenge that they need my help with, instead of emailing m e, they change the color of the cell to red and then put their question in the c omments of the cell. Once the task is complete, they change the color to green.

For them, and me, having a visual map like this has proven extremely helpful. Th ey know where to direct their attention, and at a glance, I can see how heavy th eir workload is.

For each task that I assign to a VA, there is g enerally a set of instructions for carrying out that task. These instructions ar e created by me and are generally a combination of text, images, video, and audi o. As I want to be able to easily bring new VAs up to speed, I wanted to create a scalable system for the storage and sharing of my various instruction sets.

I accomplished this by creating a membership site (I purchased the ProfitsTheme fo r this) and then structuring it in a way that was very easy to navigate. Plus, as it was a membership site, it was also very easy to protect all the content fro m the prying eyes of others!

For example, in the screenshot below are (part of) the instructions for launching a new site. Whenever I need to update the instruc tions, I have only once place to go, and that makes my life a whole lot easier!

Adsense | Google Data Retargeting Helping Your Competitors?

In March of last year, Google cam out with Their Own form of display ad retargeting, They named it remarketing.

Basically lets you remarking show ads on Third-Party Web sites to People Who Have visited your web site. If They visited your web site to learn about flowers you sell, They Can then see your ad on a flower That blog runs AdSense. That, in a nutshell IS remarketing or retargeting.

I spotted a WebmasterWorld thread Where one advertiser IS Convinced That history is history pixels Trade Site is Being Used not just for remarketing Purposes for historical site for historical purpose aussi Competitors.

Adsense | Is Google Ad Revenues Panda Munching It?

Google Recorded a record $ 9 one billion in revenue last quarter, Pleasing Wall Street, Which HAD-been jittery on the search and advertising giant After it didn 't Meet Their expectations for the first hand of the Year.

Order as Silicon Valley Watcher 's Tom Foremski Pointed out, There ' s an oddness in Google 's results.

The growth in revenue for sites run Google ads That (the AdSense program) INcreased 20% from the second quarter results in 2010 and 2% last quarter sincere. Usually the revenue from ads Those grow at about the Same rate as revenue from the ads Google gets from Its Own properties, Such as icts search engine.

Purpose revenue from ads on Google 's own sites Jumped 39% Since 2010 the Same quarter and 6% last quarter sincere.

That 's odd, Foremski says.

This huge disparity Between the Growth Rates of Google sites and partner sites IS Without precedent for Most Of Its History. For example, in 2010, Google sites never exceeded are the growth rate of partner sites:

- In Q1 Google Sites Grew 20% and 24% partner sites Grew
- In Q2 Google Sites Grew 23% and 23% partner sites Grew
- In Q3 Google Sites Grew 22% and 22% partner sites Grew
- In Q4 Grew 22% Google sites and partner sites Grew 24%

Yet in Q1 2011 Google sites 'Suddenly Jumped growth and Without Any explanation: Google Sites Grew 32% and 19% partner sites Grew.

Google Gave no explanation in STI earnings call yesterday, and no one seemed particularly Interested, except Foremski.

UPDATE: Google 's head of webspam and de facto disputes Foremski Spokesman Matt Cutts ' s Contention That Google hasn 't-been forthcoming about AdSense Panda eating, in a comment on Hacker News.

/ UPDATE

Purpose There May Be a one word explanation for Why revenue from millions of websites Slowed and Google 's own pink - Panda.

That 's the code name for Google ' s recent revamping of STIs search algorithms to weed out content factories and low-quality sites from STI top rankings (Not Without Much controversy). Content mass Manufacturers, Such as Demand Media and eHow, as well as less well Known operations Rely on Google Adsense ads to make money off Their webpages. That 's Because AdSense Is Easy to drop in and Can Be Used to fill advertising slots That Can ' t Be High Paying filled with ads.

So is it possible, That we are now seeing Google 's anti-spam web team accidentally Punishing the AdSense revenues Programs by Promoting Sites That Don ' t Rely Heavily on AdSense and demoting Many do That?

The theory doesn 't explain the giant jump in Google ' s own sites returned on Its Own - since I don 't see how Panda ' s exchange Would drive more people to click on the search ads INSTEAD.

But It 's possible, That ' sa small contribution and Google ad revenues on Its Own sites are just getting more benefit from better algorithms Either, better rates on ads in YouTube or Even rising mobile ad revenue.

UPDATE: Reader JN adds via e-mail:

What you 're Seeing is cutting out the middleman Google. There 's No Reason for Google search to send users to made-for-AdSense pages, Where Google shares revenue with the external site, When Can Google get the ad revenue from year one
the search result page.

From Google 's perspective, Adsense sites are only Worthwhile If They Have Their Own organic traffic. If They Get Their search traffic from Google, They 're competition for Google ' s own ads. It 's Malthus in Google ' s interest-rate down to sites with ads in Google 's own search results.

This reasoning May, over time, cut off the air supply of the "content farm 'industrie. THEY Need Google, Google No Longer Needs aim em.

Advertisers with effective metrics Generally That has seen click-through from a search page, When users are looking for something, IS far more Likely to result in a dirty Than click on a year ad we have third-party page, the Where Is An Ad interruption.

Advertisers turn off the Smart When buying Google Adsense ads.

This is party Why Adsense ads are Generally Rather low-rent from Advertisers. That we measure, and find That 36% of AdSense Advertisers, by domain name, are What we call "bottom feeders ", with no valid business behind the web site.

All This Is Well Known in the SEO community. If anything, the surprise in the quarterly results Adsense Is That are back up at all.

It 's just a theory, and would love to hear Your Thoughts about whether the Panda IS munching on Adsense. I Asked Google 's press office if There Was Someone to talk with about this, aim haven ' t Heard back.

Adsense | In Antitrust "Complaint Du Jour " French Daily Deals Company Files Claim Against Google

In what is becoming a steady parade of antitrust claims against Google in Europe, another complaint has been filed by a French company. This latest (10th) antitrust complaint was filed with the European Commission by a French daily deals site called "Deal du Jour. " The company claims "Google illegally removed its site from its web index without any justification [and] blocked it from using its Adsense advertising service, "according to Reuters.

(See postscripts below for clarification on the nature of the claims from the company.)

I haven 't read the complaint or have factual information beyond what is described in the Reuters story. However on their face there 'sa good deal about the claims that don ' t seem to hold up.

The argument goes: Google doesn 't want to show "Deal du Jour ' s " site in search results or allow it to market through AdSense because Google is now in the deals business (with Offers and its recent purchase of The Dealmap) and wants to marginalize or eliminate competitors. Yet a quick search for "les deals, " "deal du jour " or any number of variations on those queries on Google.fr shows that 's not true.

Any deal-related query yields dozens of deal sites operating in France. The image below is from the results for a query for "deals du jour Paris ":

There 's nothing special about Deal du Jour. It 's merely one of numerous daily deal sites operating in France. Better known competitors such as Groupon.fr, LivingSocial, Facebook, kgb and many others are all present and readily discoverable in organic results.

If Google wanted to be "anti-competitive " why would Google block Deal du Jour vs Groupon.fr or numerous other more visible or formidable daily deal competitors? It doesn 't really withstand logic.

Regardless of its merits, the Deal du Jour complaint is unlikely to be the last filed against Google. I suspect that other companies will emerge and add their frustrations to the chorus of complaints before the European Commission has finished its antitrust investigation.

Postscript: I received an email from the company that said the dispute actually involves a trademark claim regarding use of the term "deal du jour. " Here 's the unedited, verbatim email:

Postscript II: It turns out that the nature of the complaint is very different than it appears in the Reuters story, which did a poor job of laying out the company 's claims against Google. I 've had several email interactions with Deal du Jour now and now have a better understanding of the nature their claim.

Deal du Jour says it owns the trademark to "Deal du Jour " (deal of the day) in France. The company made a complaint to Google in June regarding use of the phrase "Deal du Jour " in AdWords text by other French companies. According to Deal du Jour Google disputed the validity of the trademark. Deal du Jour told me in email, "Google... Decline our request with the words your trademarks are generic and not valid. "

The company 's anti-competition claim involves alleged retaliation by Google over this trademark-related complaint.

Adsense | Uppercase Google AdWords Display URLs

Reports from WebmasterWorld show that Google is testing AdWords and AdSense ads with the display URLs in all caps.

As you may remember, Google AdWords recently changed their display URL policy to require the display URLs to be lowercase.

But some advertisers are claiming, at least on the AdSense side, the display URLs are sometimes being converted to all caps. One said:

I was quite surprised last night to see an ad on my gmail account where the display URL was in all CAPS.

In fact, many advertisers continue to enter the display URLs for their ads in various cases just in case Google changes their mind. Another advertiser explained, "I still cap words in the URL. You never know, they might change their minds about it. "

Have you seen it?
